Lionel Modern Track 3-Brown-Ties 8 curved & 6 Straight 9" pieces & Loc-On - O-27

Description: O-27 Gauge track was acquired by Lionel when in 1927 they absorbed Ives Trains. This track’s notable feature was that it has the sharpest curves. Eight sections of curved track describe a circle that is 27 inches in diameter. O-31 / O-72 Standard Gauge track will not mate with 027 track because it is one-eighth of an inch higher and eight sections of curved track create a circle that is 31 inches in diameter.Super-O track was first available in 1957 and will not mate with either of the "tubular type" of track issued previously. Twelve curved sections of this track make a 36-inch diameter circle. Because of the tight radius (for O Scale) of the curved sections used by all of these tracks, Lionel was limited by the length of the engines and cars that could be run on these tracks. Lionel frequently employed what has become known as "selective compression" of these engines and cars. Selective compression reduces the size of this equipment by uniformly shortening their length while giving the impression of being a full-sized O Scale model. History:Youthful inventor Joshua Lionel Cowen wasn't the first to manufacture toy trains. vBut his talents as an engineer and salesman soon put Lionel ahead of its competitors. Cowen designed his first train, the Electric Express, not as a toy, but as an eye-catching display for toy stores. During Lionel's early days, Americans were captivated by the railroads and awed by electricity, still a rarity in many homes. Lionel's first trains were powered by wet-cell (acid-filled!) batteries, soon replaced by the 110-volt electric transformer. By 1906, with the introduction of the preassembled 2 1/8" "Standard Gauge" track and a selection of engines and cars, the Lionel we know today was already taking shape. In 1926 Lionel bought Ive's Trains and with it came the preassembled 1 1/2" 027 sectional track. Cowen got endorsements from celebrities, and even started a Lionel radio show. Slogans such as "Lionel: The Father and Son Railroad," and "Real enough for a man to enjoy - simple enough for a boy to operate," were the first of many to pitch family themes. Meanwhile, Lionel's fabulously illustrated catalogs became children's cherished "wish books." The products they portrayed - like the No. 402 electric engine, the Hellgate Bridge, and the No. 840 Power Station - grew ever more elaborate. Working accessories - including crossing gates, highway flashers, and traffic warning bells - became more and more lifelike. This was a golden age for Lionel, but like the Roaring Twenties, it didn't last. During the Great Depression, Lionel's sales and profits slumped, and 1931 was its first year in the red. Ironically, as times grew tougher, the company introduced its greatest standard-gauge steam locomotive, the No. 400E, whose $42.50 price was beyond the means of most families. In 1934, financial troubles led Lionel into court-ordered receivership to stave off bankruptcy. That year the company's fortunes were boosted by the debut of the wildly popular Mickey and Minnie handcar, a $1 windup toy. Meanwhile, streamlining was all the rage on America's railroads, and Lionel followed suit with its own designs, like the Union Pacific, the Hiawatha, and the Flying Yankee. Lionel showed profits again in 1935, and the receivership was discharged. The No. 700E New York Central Hudson, with its blueprint-accurate details, appealed to adult hobbyists. It also marked the ascendancy of affordable 1 1/2" "O" Gauge over the more expensive 2 1/8" standard gauge, which was discontinued in 1939. The "father and son railroad" of Joshua Lionel Cowen and Lawrence Cowen ended in 1959, when they sold their interest in Lionel to distant relative Roy Cohn. Lionel in the 1960s was a company that had lost its founder and its bearings. America was undergoing social upheaval, and the idealized image of Lionel railroading no longer fit in. In a doomed effort to diversify, the company introduced slot cars, science kits, and even phonographs. Despite several creative covers, Lionel catalogs soon featured uninspiring product shots, devoid of all romance.Joshua Lionel Cowen passed away in 1965 at the age of 88. Another American legend, the venerable Twentieth Century Limited, made its last run in 1967. That same year Lionel filed for bankruptcy. The company licensed its electric train manufacturing to breakfast-cereal conglomerate General Mills in 1969. - History of Lionel Trains"O" and "O27" height tubular tracks are both the same gauge ("Gauge" is the distance between the rails, approximately 1, 3/8 inches for "O" and "O27" track). "O27" track has a lower profile than "O" track."O27" height track can now be found with 27, 42, 54 and 75inch diameter curves. "O" height track can now be found with 31inch, 42inch, 54inch, 72inch and 96inch diameter curves. As an example, see the last picture which shows the different "O27" height track curves. I suggest that you test all track (new or used) before using to make sure that there is no shorting caused by damaged center rail insulators. It is way easier to find these problems now, before laying your track down, and it only takes a few seconds. All you would need are two wires attached to a 12-14 volt bulb, and two wires with alligator clips attached to a transformer. Clip the alligator clips to the center and one of the outer rails, then touch the wires attached to the bulb to the same rails - no light = a shorting insulator. The circuit breaker on your transformer may activate before testing with the bulb if the insulator is bad too, but circuit breakers on Post and Pre-War transformers are usually slow to react. When using O27 height wider radius track, small size differences can leave one scratching their head when things just don't seem to line up. When using O54 curve track please note that the K-line version is 1/4 inch longer than Lionel's.When using O42 curve track please note that the K-line version is 1/2 inch longer than Lionel's. As a side note, K-line's O42 track has 4 ties, Lionel's have 3.There are also similar differences with "O" height track. Be aware that track sizes can also be inconsistent even within the same manufacturer's tracks. Lionel's "O" height O54 curve tracks have been known to vary in length by up to 1/2 inch. Clean track = fewer running problems. Again, it is easier to clean used track before using them on the layout. Clean used track with a plastic scouring pad (the green ones you find at the 99cent store are fine) - never use steel wool. Then give them a rub down with a little rubbing alcohol on a folded paper towel. A "rat tail" file may be needed to clean inside the rail where the pins go. If pins are loose, tighten them by pinching the track in the webbed area, high near the tubular portion, using "cutting" pliers. If the track has rust, it is best to use these sections for display shelves, or to salvage insulators and pins (clean these pins before using too, sandpaper will be fine to use for this purpose). Rusty rails could be used on the layout as part of a scrap pile. When screwing the tracks down, don’t overtighten and bend the ties, this could change the gauge slightly, or cause insulator shorts. Do not use nails! 1/2 or 5/8 inch long # 4 screws are perfect. When planning your layout use the widest radius curves that you can. Common O27 or O31 radius curves might be fine with the trains you have now, but in the future? All trains will run and look better rounding wider curves too.
