The black 221 replaced the gray 221 in the '47 line. Features include a painted die-cast boiler, 2-6-4 wheel arrangement, detailed driving wheel hardware, black drive wheels, sheet-metal trailing truck, three-position E-unit, headlight plus wire handrails. The number is always stamped below the cab window. It came with a 221T non-whistling tender which is painted to match the color of the steamer and has the New York Central lettering decals on each side, although the tender is not included with this locomotive. Many collectors and operators still enjoy the 221. Although it is somewhat under-sized in terms of scale length, there is still a certain charm to this unique-looking locomotive.
