Description: GENERAL SIMON CAMERON (1799-1889) received a meager education in the public schools of Maytown, Lancaster County, PA, where he was born. Simon contracted to build the New Orleans Canal, organized the Bank of Middletown and promoted the construction of the Harrisburg, Portsmouth and Mt. Joy/Lancaster Railroad. He became a United States Senator first in 1845 and again in 1857, 1867 and 1873. Simon was key to giving Lincoln the Pennsylvania vote. In return, Lincoln made him Secretary of War and later minister to Russia. Simon was a Democrat and a Know-Nothng before becoming a Republican in 1856. Cameron was noted for his corrupt dealings and as a political chameleon. One-page 7 ½ x 9 ¾ ALS, January 6, 1852, Cameron writes to Colonel Reah Frazer of Lancaster, PA, with a reference to the “October elections.” This may have been a reference to the Pennsylvania gubernatorial election. Incumbent governor William F. Johnson, a Whig, was a candidate for re-election but was narrowly defeated by Democratic candidate William Bigler. “Dear Col. “I wish you would send Mr. Cass a copy of the Intelligencer of today, with the article marked, which refers to the October elections. “I shall see a number of persons at Bainbridge tomorrow attending...sale, and will do all I can. “We must fight on till the end. “Truly yours “Simon Cameron” REAH FRAZER (1804-1856) was a well-known attorney and prominent member of the Democratic Party in Lancaster County, PA. His father, William C. Frazer (1776-1838) was a Lancaster County attorney and served as a Supreme Court Judge in Wisconsin territory. His grandfather, William Frazer (1753-1817) was a Revolutionary War veteran and served as a justice of the peace in New Castle County, Delaware. Folds, light toning.
