Description: Limoges Coiffe Cabinet Plate Hand Painted Pink Roses w/Double Gold 1891-1914 Elegant Decorative Coiffe Fine China CABINET PLATE, Striking Hand Painted PINK ROSES w/Leaves from COIFFE, Scalloped & Embossed Rim, BOLD DOUBLE GOLD TRIM on Rim, 1891-1914 from Limoges, France DESCRIPTION: This superb quality china has colors that are bright & realistic. This was hand painted on a blank of fine white china. The whimsical design has both solid and stippled double gold. The colors used on the rose sprays are pink, blue, green and lavender on the white porcelain. The embossing and scalloping on the cabinet plate makes it very pretty. The decorative cabinet plate is beautiful and could be used for a variety of purposes. Being from the early 1890's, this is a great example of the porcelain of that era. Inspect the photos carefully. This plate was lovingly used for many years. The gold really highlights the embossing. The rim area has a light blue wash that fades to the white of the porcelain; this makes the double gold pop out. CONDITION: While this cabinet plate is classified as used, the condition is superb. The gold on the rim does show very minor wear to some of the points on the jagged rim. This does not distract from the beauty of the plate. We find no nicks, chips, scratches, cracks, hairlines, or repairs. There appears to be no crazing. Study the photos to see this. The gold and paint are beautiful. DIMENSIONS: The plate has a diameter of 7 7/8" and a height of 1". HISTORY/MARKS: Begun in the 1850's, Vogt & Dose became Tressemann & Vogt when Emillien Tressemann joined the company in 1882. This was essentially a decorating studio which began manufacturing their own china in 1891 in Limoges, France. The company continued until it was dissolved due to the retirement of Tressemann in 1907. From 1907-1919, the company operated as Porcelain Gustave Vogt under the direction of Gustave Vogt, John Vogt's son, and continued to use the T&V mark. T&V is well known for its quality whiteware and boldly decorated hand paintings. The marks used on this set are the manufacturers underglaze mark in green referenced in Mary Frank Gaston's Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain, 3rd edition as mark #2 for Coiffe. L. Coiffe started the prolific Limoges porcelain factory and studio during the mid-1870’s and his son, E. Coiffe, continued the operation starting in 1887 and continuing until the mid-1920’s. This mark was used in the early 1891-1914. In addition, there is also the red J.McD. & S. (for Jones, McDuffee & Stratton) overglaze mark #7 used 1890's-1914. The Boston waterfront company was founded in 1810 by Otis Norcross on Fish Street. In 1827 his son Otis continued the business under the Norcross name. In 1853 Jerome Jones began to work for Norcross. Louis McDuffee, a Canadian from Quebec, joined in 1863. Soloman Stratton, a Bostonian, joined to replace Otis Norcross, Jr. since Otis retired from the business to become Mayor of Boston in 1866. The firm became “Jones, McDuffee and Stratton” in 1871 and was known by that name until it ceased to exist after celebrating its 150th anniversary in 1960. This confirms the circa for this set to be 1891-1914. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description. The stand was used as a photo prop and is not part of this listing.
