Description: The Life of Alice Freeman Palmer, by George Herbert Palmer, was published in April 1908 by Houghton Mifflin. This first edition, third impression copy was signed in June of that year and presented by Mrs. John D. Rockefeller (Laura Spelman Rockefeller) to Della B. Conover, a 1908 graduate of Vassar College. Palmer (1855-1902) served as the first female president of Wellesly College 1881-1887, and later was the first dean of women at the recently founded University of Chicago 1892-95. Mrs. Rockefeller was a generous contributor to higher education; Spelman College is named for her. This volume has a clean text and 10 plates. Cover hinges are weak, and the front flyleaf (signature page) and two sheets following are detached. Nothing is missing. This is a fine read for anyone interested in the history of higher education for and by women. There are many available copies of this biography but no other has this inscription. Treat yourself to something unique, even if you do need both hands to read the book. FREE SHIPPING to USA addresses. Inquiries welcome.
