"Libby" Elizabeth Lloyd Holman ; May 23, 1904 – June 18, 1971) was an American socialite, actress, singer, and activist. Holman left her hometown in the fall of 1924 to pursue acting in New York City. Her first theater job in New York was in the road company of The Fool. Channing Pollock, the writer of The Fool, recognized Holman's talents immediately and advised her to pursue a theatrical career. She followed Pollock's advice and soon became a star. 281 7772400 10058400 259 261 257 276 262 279 1 0`````````````````````` 5 1 0 285 282 1 False 0 0 0 0 -1 304800 243 True 128 77 255 3175 3175 70 True True True True True 278 134217728 1 1 -9999996.000000 -9999996.000000 8 Empty 16711680 52479 26367 13421772 16737792 13382502 16777215 Bluebird 22860000 22860000 (`@````````` 266 263 5 110185200 110185200 The recordings in Encore 2 represent Libby Holman at the height of her at the height of her powers. All were electrically recorded and show her dramatic and creative singing style. Her songs interpretations were unique and we are treated and surprised by the multitude of her vocal effects. You almost feel like she is living the song as she sings it. No other singer sang like this. In 1939 she and Josh White, the black folk singer, became the first mixed-race male and female artists to ever perform together, record together and tour together. It was while on the road that Holman began to see firsthand the prejudice that blacks faced as White was denied permission to stay at the hotels at which they were Booked. They would continue performing off and on for the next six years During this period there is a greater intensity in her singing. This CD includes many of her songs successes and blues recordings made with Josh White in 1942.. All recordings were restored by Vintage Recordings. Several Items will have a symbol next to a song.
