Description: Letterio Calapai (American, 1901 - 1992), Play of Snow. Small edition. Signed, dated '87, titled and inscribed "15/50" in pencil by the artist in the lower margin. The print is also monogrammed in the lower right corner of the image and blindstamped with the artist's chop "LC imp." in the lower right margin. The artist uses the second block, inked a subtle green color, to suggest the shimmering effect of light and wind on the snowy yard.Calapai was an influential American painter and printmaker. Born in Boston in 1901 to Italian immigrant parents, he graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art in 1925 and was awarded a two-year scholarship to the School of Fine Arts and Crafts in Boston. In 1928, he moved to New York continuing his studies at the Beaux Art Institute of Design, the Art Students’ League and the American Artists School. His first solo exhibition was in 1933. Letterio Calapai died in Glencoe, Illinois on his 91st birthday, March 29, 1993. Calapai worked at Atelier 17 in New York between 1946 and 1949 under Stanley Hayter, then was hired to establish the printmaking department at the Albright Art School of the University of Buffalo. Returning to New York City in 1955, he established the Intaglio Workshop for Advanced Printmaking in Greenwich Village and later taught at the New School For Social Research, New York University, and Brandeis University. He moved to Chicago in 1965 and continued teaching at the University of Illinois and produced prints into his eighties. His work is included in the collections of the Library of Congress and numerous major American and foreign museums. Flat rate shipping in the U.S. is $15.00.
