Description: The very large Coolamon Bowl 55 cms long and a woven Hair Ring Pad 18 cms wide, were collected together in Northern New South Wales in the very early days and was most likely made before contact with the whites. The Coolamon is very solid and has a beautiful rippled ribbing running it's length.Coolamons were used for winnowing seed, carrying water, gathering, and even digging. They were usually made by men for the women's use and this one was definately made by a craftsman with it's fine work, bowed rims and beautiful shape. The Hair Ring Pad is a fine example that would have been used to cushion the weight of carrying the Coolamon on the head. A great length of human hair would have been donated by the women for the purpose of making it. The ring had the same purpose as those used by women in traditional cultures around the world to carry vessels on their heads. It is in good order and nowadays a very rare object, and would have been a much loved possession of the owner. Old Collection. To be respected and protected.
