Description: This listing is for a Japanese uchiwa fan for ceremonial use, late Edo period (1603-1868). These fans have a very old history, dating as far as back as the 14th century. Made by hand of brown oiled paper with wooden handle and brass fittings. One side is decorated with characters. We are given to understand that such fans were used ceremonially. This one was used as a wall decoration by the prior owner as can be confirmed in the photos showing remnants of the substance used to hold it to the surface. It measures about 35.5” high x 23.5” diameter. Without the stick the fan measures about 21.5”. Gently used, it shows wear consistent with age and use; and a small white mark to the lower right. There are no tears or cracks. The fan is signed above the stick. Take a look at the photos for any and all condition issues. Please feel free to reach out with any questions before buying.
