Felix Bonfils (1831-1885) was a French photographer active in the Middle East from the 1860s until his death in 1885. He created a remarkable record of the Middle East second to none. His son, Adrien took over the business upon his father’s death carrying on until around 1900. Additionally, Lydie Bonfils, Felix’s wife continued producing images after that even issuing her own catalog and remaining in the Middle East until forced to evacuate at the beginning of the First World War. The slide also displays the publisher’s label which reads, “McIntosh Battery and Optical, Co., 141 & 143 Wabash Avenue, Chicago, ILL., U.S.A.” Lyman McIntosh founded the McIntosh N.U. Supporter Co. in the early 1870s. In 1881 he featured a microscope that was convertible to a stereopticon and dealt in projection microscopes, projection lanterns and other optical apparatus. In the late 1880s the company name was changed to the McIntosh Battery & Optical Company offering microscopes into the 1890s until his death in 1890. Send questions.
