This first edition first state version of "Ozma of Oz" is notable for it's particular printing of the publisher's name along the spine tail as "The Reilly & Britton Co.", the presence of "O" in "Ozma" on the "Author's Note" on page 11, the advertisement page in the rear offering "The Land of Oz" and "John Dough and the Cherub", inserted pictoral end-papers, and use of color text illustrations rather than inserted color plates. L. Frank Baum was born on May 15, 1856 in Chittenango, NY the seventh of nine children, and one of only 5 who survived into adulthood. In love from an early age with writing, printing, and theatrics, Baum would use a cheap printing press his father had gifted him to publish two amateur journals and an 11-page pamphlet by age 17. In 1886, Baum published his first novel "The Book of Hamburgs" about the Hamburg chicken which he had been raising for nearly a decade at that point. Baum would perform in several plays throughout his life before moving to the Dakota Territory (today South Dakota) with his wife in 1888. Baum's experience in drought-ridden Dakota would help define his descriptions of Kansas in "The Wizard of Oz". in 1891 Baum would move his family to Chicago where he would meet illustrator W. W. Denslow, with whom Baum would work on "Father Goose, His Book" which saw great success and would be followed by "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" in 1900. "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" would be the best-selling children's book for two years and spawned thirteen sequels based on the people of the land of Oz. "Ozma of Oz" would be the third novel released within the original series. It was notable both for being the first novel in the series to take place mostly outside of Oz and for solidifying Baum's intent to write the coming novels as a series. "Ozma of Oz" would also offer a notable change in the series theming, making reaching Oz the goal rather than escaping it. It also codified Dorothy's last name as "Gale", which all subsequent stories and adaptations would use. Seller ID: 1386421 Subject: Literature Welcome to the eBay store of Second Story Books!
