KING EDWARD VIII - MENU SIGNED CIRCA 1913 CO-SIGNED BY: SIR JOHN RHYS, WALTER (VISCOUNT MONCKTON I) MONCKTON, E. VINCENT EVANS, ENOS HERBERT GLYNNE "E. H. G." ROBERTS - HFSID 166504 KING EDWARD VIII As Prince of Wales, the future King best remembered for his abdication signs inconspicuously on the menu from a Welsh Dinner at Oxford University. Other dignitaries, including future Cabinet Minister Walter Monckton, an advisor to Edward VIII during the abdication crisis, and prominent Welsh scholars, have also signed. Menu signed: "Edward", "John Rhys", "Vincent Evans", "Walter Monckton", "E Roberts", 4 pages, 4x6½, with heavy white cover tied together with blue, gray and purple ribbons. Menu of the Oxford University Welsh Dinner, Tuesday, February 25, 1913, held at the Randolph Hotel, Oxford. Signed on the back page in pencil. EDWARD, PRINCE OF WALES, the future KING EDWARD VIII (1894-1972, reigned 1936) the eldest son of King George V and Queen Mary, was created Prince of Wales in 1911. During WWI, he served as a staff officer in France, Egypt and Italy. In 1919, the Prince of Wales visited Canada and the U.S. When King George V died in January 1936, Edward became England's first bachelor King in 176 years. There were official protests opposing his proposal to marry and elevate as Queen Mrs. Wallis Warfield Simpson, an American divorce. Met by unyielding opposition to this marriage by his ministers, he chose to abdicate in December 1836. Edward, delivering a memorable radio address. Created Duke of Windsor by his brother and successor, King George VI, he married Wallis the following June. Suspected of German sympathies, Edward was relegated to a secondary post (Governor General of the Bahamas) during World War II, and lived abroad - mostly in France - with Mrs. Simpson (now a Duchess), for the rest of his life, not formally invited to a ceremony back to England until 1967 (for a ceremony honoring his mother). JOHN RHYS (1840-1915) was the first Celtic Professor at Oxford University (1877), and later the bursar and principal of Jesus College there. Knighted in 1907, he joined the Privy Council in 1911. He was a founding member of the British Academy, which named an annual lecture in his honor. E VINCENT EVANS (1851-1934) was a London banker, and a scholar of the history and antiquities of his Welsh homeland. A leading member of many Welsh cultural organizations, he was particularly active in aiding Welsh veterans of World War I. WALTER MONCKTON (1891-1965), a star cricket player at Harrow and Oxford, was President of the Oxford Union at the time of this dinner. Pursuing a career in law and politics, he became Attorney General for the Duchy of Cornwall (1932) and an advisor to King Edward VIII during the abdication crisis. Elected to Parliament in 1951, he served in the Cabinets of Winston Churchill (as Minister of Labor, 1951-1955) and Anthony Eden (as Minister of Defense, 1955-1956). The only Cabinet member to oppose Eden's Suez policy, he was shunted aside to Paymaster General before becoming the first Viscount Monckton in 1957. ENOS HERBERT GLYNNE "E. H. G." ROBERTS served with the British Expeditionary Force in France during World War I. He wrote a history of his unit, the 9th Battalion, King's Liverpool Regiment, in 1922. He later served as Chief Justice of the Rangoon High Court in colonial Burma. There are 14 additional signers, unidentified at present. The printed list of toasts suggest that King George V was present at the dinner, but he was apparently not asked to autograph the menu. Lightly worn. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
