Description: J.R.R. Tolkien, “Lord of the Rings,” Ace Unauthorized Pirated Editions, 1965. Ace A-4, A-5, A-6, Unauthorized Editions, 1965. 4.125x7x1. Books are in good condition. Internally clean and unmarked. Slight tanning to fore edges and throughout. Foxing to interior of covers. Moderate sunning to spines, especially volume 2. Binding and pages still tight and secure. Creasing, rubbing, and folding to covers, corners, and spines, most pronounced to volume 1. Slight rolling to spines. Chipping and loss to edges of cover and around head of spine to volume 3. Art to cover and title page by Jack Gaughan. Housed in custom canary yellow slipcase. Published without Tolkien's blessing, these Unauthorized Ace editions were soon afterwards discontinued, making them exceedingly rare. Includes “The Fellowship of the Ring” (A-4), “The Two Towers” (A-5), and “The Return of the King” (A-6). Ace never paid Tolkien any royalties for publishing this set, which meant they were pulled from the market fairly quickly, making these sets incredibly difficult to come by. Since these were the first widely available copies of the trilogy, they’re usually in pretty rough shape. What complicated the story was the poor artwork Tolkien actually commissioned from Barbara Remington with Ballantine paperbacks. She came up with the artwork having never read the story. Tolkien actually liked the Unauthorized artwork of Jack Gaughan more than what he actually paid for!
