A self-taught painter from Santiago, contemporary of Tejada, who spent much of his life painting his hometown. He was the founder and first director of the museum-library of Santiago de Cuba and had a strong connection to the conspiratorial tasks in the last War of Independence. He was also a prominent promoter of the arts and a zealous guardian of Cuban cultural heritage. Due to his connections in the 1895 war, he was exiled and traveled to Haiti, Costa Rica and finally to New York, where he worked as a painter, designer of buildings and monuments, and taught painting and drawing. During that period, his portraits and creative work stood out. He also dabbled in the art of modeling and was awarded various awards such as the Gold Medal of the Cuban Marine Societies and the rank of Admiral of the Order of Nautical Merit. Pintor santiaguero de formación autodidacta, contemporáneo de Tejada, que pasó gran parte de su vida pintando su ciudad natal. Fue fundador y primer director del museo-biblioteca de Santiago de Cuba y tuvo una fuerte vinculación a las tareas conspirativas en la última Guerra de Independencia. También fue un destacado promotor de las artes y un celoso guardián del patrimonio cultural cubano. Por sus vínculos en la guerra de 1895, fue desterrado y viajó a Haití, Costa Rica y finalmente a Nueva York, donde trabajó como pintor, diseñador de edificios y monumentos, y enseñó pintura y dibujo. Durante esa etapa, destacaron sus retratos y su labor creativa. También incursionó en el arte del modelado y se le otorgaron varios premios como; la Medalla de Oro de las Sociedades Marinas Cubanas y el grado de Almirante de la Orden del Mérito Náutico. A su retiro fue nombrado director honorario del museo Emilio Bacardí y de la Biblioteca Provincial Elvira Cape.
