Description: This is a custom 1/6 scale 12" figure commemorating a very colorful figure in American history, John Brown. John Brown was born May 9, 1800 and died December 2, 1859. Brown is said to be one of the most insightful people of his generation. Others think he was a maniacal terrorist. John Brown was a part of an organized abolitionist movement that was against slavery with many other people. He just felt that too many people in the movement were pacifist and doing too much talking with not enough action. Brown thought that armed insurrection was the best way to bring an end to slavery. In 1856 John Brown was part of the Bleeding Kansas crisis. Brown organized small groups of volunteers and put his plan to action. They were involved in battles at Black Jack and Osawatomie. Brown and his volunteers killed five pro-slavery supporters in Pottawatomie in response to pro-slavery forces sacking Lawrence Ks. In 1859 John Brown led a raid on the federal armory at Harper's Ferry, Virginia. His idea was to arm the slaves there and start a liberation movement. The attack failed. They faced pro slavery farmers, militia, and a group of marines led by Robert E. Lee. Within 36 hours of the start of the attack all of Brown's men had been killed, captured, or fled. John Brown was taken prisoner. He was tried for treason against the commonwealth of Virginia, murdering five men, and inciting a slave insurrection. John Brown was found guilty on all counts. He was hanged. However, the nation took notice. The pro slavery Southerners thought it was just the beginning of more Northern plots to start a slave rebellion and feared that their lives were in danger. The Republicans dismissed those claims and vowed not to interfere with slavery in the South. Historians do agree that John Brown's actions heightened the tension which led a year later to the South succeeding the Union and the start of the Civil War. Brown's actions as an abolitionist before the start of the Civil War make him a controversial figure yet today. Some say he was an incredible visionary responsible for the end of slavery while others classify him as a crazy madman. This item was designed for display and would make a nice addition to any collection. Please note while this figure does not look exactly like John Brown there is a bit of a resemblance. sold as is. stand included. Please note the following-when a figure is a custom figure that means it is not a licensed product,or "official" but something the customizer did by combining figures and accessories from different makers and toy releases to come up with the custom figure or figures. I started customizing figures a few years back because I couldn't find more than a handful of "official" releases and unable to find figures of people I wanted to collect. I checked in to the market of custom figures. Most of the custom figures available back then cost several hundred dollars, so, I started doing my own. Because I needed to support my new hobby, I started selling some custom figures. My prices reflect my acquisition cost, time involved, and some profit. Thanks for the look, have fun shopping!
