As theAuditorium neared the end of its first decade, some 3,000 milesaway the famous British organist, Reginald Foort, met with the M.P.Moller Company of Hagerstown, Maryland, to discuss a uniqueproject — construction of a portable theatre pipe organ. Out of theirefforts, Moller Opus 6690 was born. It consisted of a massive five-manual console which controlled 27 ranks of pipes. Both consoleand the total of 2,031 pipes were mounted on rollers which enabledFoort, accompanied by an entourage of 15 men and four 30-footvans to undertake a series of "one night stands" throughout theBritish Isles in the year before the start of World War II.The war brought an abrupt end to Foort's successful tour andthe organ was acquired by the British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC) as a replacement for the BBC Broadcast Organ which hadbeen destroyed by German bombs. Used throughout the war by theBBC, the Foort/BBC/M6ller was sold in the mid-60's to the Dutchradio network. The mid-70's brought the organ back to the Mollerfactory for renovation after its purchase by a San Diego restaurantfirm. It was in San Diego where it caught the eye of an expert col-lector, Mr. J. B. Nethercutt, chairman of Merle Norman Cosmetics, who housed it in Sylmar before donating it to the City of Pasadena.Installation and revoicing of the 28 ranks of pipes was com-pleted by the expert workmen from Junchen-Collins Organ Corpo*ration of Woodstock, Illinois in nine months.Today the Auditorium is the centerpiece of the new PasadenaCenter. According to Daily Variety the 3,063 seat house offersunsurpassed luxury to audiences large and small and "among thebest sight-lines in the Los Angeles area".
