Description: Lee, Henry, OBSERVATIONS ON THE WRITINGS OF THOMAS JEFFERSON, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO THE ATTACK THEY CONTAIN ON THE MEMORY OF THE LATE GEN. HENRY LEE. IN A SERIES OF LETTERS, BY H. LEE. Philadelphia: J. Dobson:Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co.;Carey & Hart., 1839. Second Edition, brown cloth hardcover, 8vo (8.75x5.375"), very good/n.a., 262pp. Corners and head and tail of spine very lightly rubbed, light foxing and age toning throughout. A very special tome this one. Written on behalf of "Light Horse Harry Lee" (Major General Henry Lee III, 1756-1818) by his son Henry Lee IV(1798-1871). This is the second edition published by Light Horse Harry's other son (1/2 son), Charles Carter Lee (1798-1871) who wrote the introduction and notes. It is the second edition because legend, and period accounts, have it that the descendants of Thomas Jefferson destroyed all of the first editions they could get a hold of, as part of an ongoing feud with the Lee family. What we have here is a defense of the Lee family - by the notables of the Lee family. The great Confederate General Robert E. Lee was born in 1807 and was also a son of Light Horse Harry Lee; who died when he was young. He would have been 32years old when this book was printed; serving As a first lieutenant of engineers supervising the construction of the St. Louis harbor in St. Louis, MO. Robert E. Lee most likely had a copy of this book - it was the book about his daddy and the ongoing feud between the Jefferson and Lee families. Quite the distinctive book indeed - so much captured tyme!
