Balthazar Jean Baron (1788-1869) was a French designer, etcher and lithographer. Originally from Lyon, Balthazar (sometimes written Balthazard) Jean Baron seems to have learned the art of lithography on his own around 1823-1824, before turning to etching. During a trip to Paris, he met Eugène Bléry who recommended that he study the technique of the Lyon engraver Jean-Jacques de Boissieu. He draws “from nature”. While managing a silk factory and being a magistrate attached to the Lyon commercial court (1843-1845), he began to produce a certain number of engravings from his own drawings, mainly rural landscapes or views inspired by his region. , but there are also views of Versailles, Senlis and Francheville. He is one of the three illustrators of the collection coordinated by Charles Nodier and Louis Lurine, The environs of Paris, landscape, history, monuments, customs, chronicles and traditions published by Boizard and G. Kugelmann (Paris, 1844)1. The painter-engraver Flavien Emmanuel Chabanne (Lons-le-Saulnier, 1799-1858) executed a portrait of him (1831)2.
