Description: An antique hand carved Japanese wood advertising sign that was made into a Tokyo style naga-hibachi. The wood used in this naga-hibachi came from a shop in Osaka that was selling "Champagne Cider". It's written in katakana, (the Japanese phonetic kana for foreign words) reading right to left from the upper left corner across the front. It says "Champa . . ." (It doesn't finish) It then go to the back and it continues " . . .n Cider" That this is written in katana for an English word but still written right to left indicates this shop sign was written in the late 1800's to the very early 1900's. The front (First photos) besides "Champa . . ." also states this is a registered mark (Horizontal kanji on either side of the red sun) and the shop was in Osaka. (Left side vertical writing) The back finishes the sign "N . . . Cider" also states this is Sakae's store and they're buying from "Ryu san"? Not sure about that reading but the kanji reads "buying from "Dragon Mountain" (Literally) All four sides are one piece of solid zelkova hard wood. ("Keyaki" in Japanese) This a wood known for its durability and the beauty of its wood grain. The writing is carved into the wood then coated with lacquer. The hibachi part where the ashes and hot coals would have been is lined in it's original copper sheeting. The drawers interiors and the stash box interior at the top are made of paulownia wood. This is a light weight Asian wood often used in furniture because of it light weight. These are often used as coffee tables. A metal stand can be made for it's bottom and tempered glass is set on top of the hibachi opening. Interesting items can be placed inside the hibachi. It's 28 inches wide, 13 1/8 inches high, 15 1/2 inches deep and weighs 30 pounds.
