Description: This lovely Japanese folding fan, complete with box, was probably a gift or a souvenir from Japan in the 1980s or 1990s. The fan leaf has been mounted on ten bamboo sticks which have been stained dark. The double paper leaf is painted on a red and gold ground with autumn grasses, chrysanthemums, and an ox-drawn carriage of the type used to transport the Japanese aristocracy during the Heian period (794-1185). The reverse is gold speckled paper. The fan is 10 1/2" long and 19" wide when fully opened. This is a perfect fan to give or display in the autumn; its mood is nostalgic and aristocratic as it conjures up the lost world of Lady Murasaki's THE TALE OF GENJI. It is part of a large collection of antique and vintage Japanese fans given to us to sell for the benefit of our library. Excellent condition. Like new. This fan has rarely been out of its box.
