Description: [Elizabeth Heyrick] Immediate, Not Gradual Abolition; or, an Inquiry into the Shortest, Safest, and Most Effectual Means of Getting Rid of West Indian Slavery. Philadelphia: Published by the Philadelphia Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society. Printed by Merrihew and Gunn, No 7 Carters’ Alley. 1836. 24 pages. Without wraps, expertly conserved, re-sewn. Housed in a custom archival enclosure. Published in 1836 by the Philadelphia Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society, their only issue of this important anti-slavery tract that ranked “among the best twenty-five in analysis and erudition and the influence of which were immeasurable.” (Dumond) The text was written in 1824 by Quaker abolitionist Elizabeth Heyrick (1769–1831) and its message “so persuasive that it converted Wilberforce and his colleagues in England to immediate emancipation and is given a large share of credit for the early abolition of slavery in the West Indies by act of Parliament.” (ibid) In America, the pamphlet inspired William Lloyd Garrison, Lucretia Mott, and Frederick Douglass. Douglass lectured in 1850 that Heyrick had the “head of a prophetess, and the heart of an angel ... She taught that what is right, is reasonable; and that what ought to be done, can be done, and that immediate emancipation was the right of the slave and the duty of the master. Her heavenly counsel was heeded.” Invigorated by her pamphlet, Douglas, continued, the abolitionists agitated harder: “They printed tracts and circulated their views through the press and in various ways, till the succeeded in impressing the public mind favorably to their objects…” In Philadelphia, in 1833, Philadelphia Ladies’ Anti-Slavery Society’s convention slogan “Immediate, Not Gradual Emancipation” underscored the pamphlet’s significance. Three years later, they published this edition, adding prefatory remarks. In part: “A limited edition was published that same year in this city [Phila., Rakestraw, 1824], and within the sphere of its circulation excited so much feeling and interest as induces the belief that a republication will be attended with very beneficial consequences. In this view, a second edition is offered to the American public. It is commended to the attentive, serious perusal of the reader, as the same principles and duties that apply to slavery in the West Indies are equally applicable to that which exists in the United States.” [(p2)] All editions are now very scarce to commerce.
