Description: The provenance of this doll is that it was brought back from a world trip by my wife's aunt to her in the 1950s and has been kept in a display case or closed box since. It is in seemingly perfect condition (see detailed photos). It has it's original kimono with obi and sash. I can't verify this one was made with human hair but that was the tradition. The black Japanese characters under the kimono translate to "Katsuyama", which is a city in Japan. What I found on the internet, primarily from Berea College ... These dolls are named after Sanogawa Ichimatsu, an 18th c. Kabuki actor who specialized in female roles, Ichimatsu dolls are an Edo era invention. They portray little Japanese girls and boys in their holiday silk kimonos and are sometimes commissioned by the rich as portraits of their children. The dolls are display objects, not toys. They can range in size from 5″ to 30″ (this one if 14.5"). Wooden ones are from the 1920s-1930s, this porcelain one is from the 1950s.
