Description: Huntington Beach, California July 4, 1904 First 4th of July Parade In the case of Huntington Beach, the 3rd time was the charm! Around the turn of the 20th century it was known as Shell Beach so named because of the large number of clam shells found on the beach. In 1901, Philip Stanton purchased the area and changed its name to Pacific City in an effort to build a West Coast rival to Atlantic City. In 1902 he sold the land to Henry E. Huntington, the owner of the Pacific Electric Railroad. The First Trains rolled into town on July 4, 1904 the Parade was a Welcome for the beginning of the Red Car service and has remained a treasured tradition to this day. That same year the community was renamed Huntington Beach as a tribute to Henry E. Huntington and that name stuck. Also in 1904, the first pier was built by the Huntington Beach Company and trees were planted along the streets in an attempt to make the area more attractive and Huntington Beach was born!
