Description: This is a gorgeous antique hand-embroidered silk Hungarian Matyó ornamental table cover or piano scarf. It almost certainly dates from some time between 1900 and 1940. (It's most likely from the 1920s or 1930s.) Matyó embroidery is a traditional Hungarian folk art that usually features vibrantly colored floral designs done in a "satin stitch". This is larger than most of the Matyó embroideries that I've found online. It's an irregular round / oval shape measuring about 4 foot 10 inches wide by about 4 foot 6 inches wide - not including the fringe. This was probably made as an ornamental table cover / doily, or a piano scarf. NOTE: This wouldn't be suitable for use as a "table cloth" for dining. The piece is in very nice condition. The colors are very vibrant. (It has been stored in a box for decades.) A few parts of the fringe seem to have broken strands or missing knots. (The issues are very minor.) Please view the photos. Photo #8 shows the cloth draped over a table. (Unfortunately, the table isn't the right size for this cover - but it gives some idea of how the cover looks when draped.) Photo #10 shows the fabric folded over to show a bit of the front and the back. (The front and the back are very similar.) Please let me know if you have questions or would like to see more photos. Thanks! Kat
