Howard Johnson ran a small drugstore in Quincy, Massachusetts, in 1925. The soda fountain was undoubtedly his busiest and most profitable feature in the store, so Johnson focused on it. He developed a new ice cream recipe that was a huge success, mostly due to its high butterfat content. Johnson continued to develop new flavors of ice cream, eventually hitting the magic number of "28". He opened his first sit-down restaurant toward the end of the decade, featuring clams, pot pies, baked beans, ice cream and soft drinks. In 1929, the restaurant enjoyed an unexpected boost; Mayor Nichols of Boston refused to allow O'Neill's play Strange Interlude to be performed in Boston, so the theater company moved the show to nearby Quincy. At 5 hours long, the play included a short dinner break. The Howard Johnson's Restaurant was close to the theater and served food fast enough to be the most logical choice for the theatergoers. Dozens of influential Bostonians tasted Johnson's menu that night, and word of mouth spread quickly. Howard Johnson opened concession stands along Massachusetts' beautiful beaches, vending ice cream, frankfurters, and fried clams. Each stand was successful. From the box: "Created and painted by hand, this gem is adorned with authentic, dazzling detail. Howard Johnson's, another in the continuing series of Lefton's Roadside USA Collection." From the side: "As Americans took to the open road and interstate highways made it possible for us to travel farther than ever before, the need for a good, inexpensive place to stop for food became more and more important. To fill that need, a new industry was born...FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS. HOWARD JOHNSON, a pioneer in the industry, has left an indelible mark on the American landscape. With its distinctive orange-colored roof and the pie man logo (not to mention ice cream in 28 flavors and those delicious fried clams), it set the standard for all to follow. The unique quality of the Fast Food phenomenon is that, no matter how far one travels, the familiar sight of these restaurants and the promise of the consistently good food they serve to make us feel that we are 'home'. The Lefton company is proud to introduce this latest series in the Roadside, U.S.A. Collection. Meticulous in every detail, collectors of all ages will appreciate their authenticity. Thanks to artist/designer David Stravitz, not only can you bring home the food; we've made it possible to bring home the restaurant, too!" This exquisitely detailed concession stand model depicts a Howard Johnson's circa 1940s. The distinctive building features bright yellow walls, a blue and white front counter, and a yellow and orange picnic table. The detail is amazing, from the tiny napkin dispensers on the counter to the stacks of goods in the back storage area, from the short-order kitchen appliances to the signs on the front counter declaring, "ICE CREAM 10 Normal 0 MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 ¢". The huge billboard sign on the roof reads "HOWARD JOHNSON'S ICE CREAM CLAMS FRANKFURTERS" and features the Pie Man logo. This piece is incredible, made of heavy duty resin. It is a great addition to a HO train set or city display.
