Description: Here's a beauty by Howard & Co. The ruffled rim bowl features detailed, openwork, hop flowers and leaves. Although I found a few sterling pieces with hops from the time period, I found nothing out there made by Howard & Co. I have to wonder if this was a custom piece. Howard & Co operated at 619 Broadway, New York, NY from around 1866 to 1922. They were known for high quality workmanship. The bowl is marked on the bottom "Howard & Co New York Sterling 1886 1903" (separated into four places). I don't know if 1886 or 1903 is the pattern number. I suspect that it is 1886, and 1903 denotes the year it was made. The oval bowl measures approximately 8 1/4" long and 6 3/8" wide at the rim. It weighs 146 grams. There is a single tiny ding/impression inside just above the flat bottom, on one side (think poked with an ink pen size). I don't think it can be seen in the photos for all of the reflections. Also a few tiny black dots of possible pitting? in the bottom as you can see in the photos. Please feel free to email with any questions prior to bidding or buying.
