Up for auction is a original Horace Greeley CDV photographed by Howell ., located at 857 & 869 B’way ( NewYork ) Based on similar photos of Greeley taker by other photographers this photo was probably taken in 1871 when he was a Presidential candidate for the new Liberal Republican party in the 1872 presidential election against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant . Unfortunately, Greeley and his party was unsuccessful and lost to Grant. Horace Greeley ( February 3, 1811 - November 29, 1872 ) was founder and editor of the New York Tribune, among the great newspapers of its time . Long active in politics , he served briefly as as a congressman from New York and a presidential candidate in the 1872 election. The Horace Greeley CDV is in good condition and measures approximately 2.5 x 4 “ The backmark is blank. The front of mount at the bottom is printed Horace Greeley. The corners have been trimmed as well as the top of the mount. The image of Greeley is sharp with good contrast . No soiling noted on the image or front back of the mount.
