The controls are logical and easy to use. Tap the power button and you get sound. Tap a sound button to change the sound to any of the preset available. On offer are heartbeat, white noise (constant breeze sound), cradle, ocean, brook, and summer night. Adjust the volume up/down as required, and set the timer if you want it. Without the time (the default mode) the sound plays until you switch it off. The sounds are of passable quality but are very brief. While you;d expect a heartbeat to repeat, the repetition of the more fluid sounds becomes annoying after a minute or so. That said, the twins (just a week old) didn't seem to mind the repetition of sounds that don't naturally repeat. They don't seem to be problem sleepers, so maybe are not the ideal testers, but they liked the soothing sounds nonetheless. If your child has problems sleeping, or the room suffers from noise pollution through the walls, then this might be something to try. We thought this unit might also be a handy solution for tinnitus in grownups. Alas, while it is certainly loud enough, the repetition of natural sounds becomes annoying pretty fast, so it's not great for that purpose. On this line though, there are many sound generator apps for phones, which do much the same job, and do it better, though they are not as easy to set up and operate as this device. Well, this device would benefit from having much longer loops of sound, and from loop the sounds with cross-fading, which would remove the repetition issue. Its a perfect size and looks really nice. You can either plug into an outlet or use batteries. You can choose 3 different timers or it can play continuously. 6 different sound options and our baby fell asleep so much better with the ocean sounds the first night we had it!
