Description: THE HISTORY OF A BRIGADE OF SOUTH CAROLINIANS KNOWN FIRST AS “GREGG’S” AND SUBSEQUENTLY AS “McGOWAN’S BRIGADE” BY J.F. J. CALDWELL Officer of the First Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers LIMITED EDITION - ONLY 500 PRINTED - THIS IS #95 FINE CONDITION Sharp, Bright, Clean, Solidly Bound Book Handsome Cover Design with Crossing, Confederate Flags Loaded with Illustrations and Maps; Maps Printed on the Endpages Too ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED IN 1866, THIS IS THE OUT-OF-PRINT, 1984 REPRINT BY MORNINGSIDE BOOKSHOP This is a fascinating account from a Confederate eyewitness and participant in the war. It is not only an account of what the brigade did and what battles it fought, but it addresses basic soldier issues and thus provides a real feel for what the unit looked and felt like from a man on the front lines. It takes you to where you can smell the sharp bite of gunpowder and see the shells raining down over your head….an amazing memoir. It includes sketches of the principal officers and commanders before each action, the relative strengths and positions of the regiments, and a list of casualties in each regiment as well. The fact that this book was written and published immediately after the war in 1866 gives it a freshness and reliability that is lacking in longer deferred accounts of the war. Caldwell’s unit moved from Charleston to northern Virginia in time for the first Battle of Manassas and thereafter fought in all major campaigns in Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. The book includes unit rosters for each company and the Regiment. THIS BOOK IS IN FINE CONDITION This handsome book is in excellent condition. Only 500 copies of this numbered book were published; this is number 95 (see photo.) The book was received by Civil War historian Robert Krick from the Publishers at the National Park Service as noted on the inscription on the front end page as shown. The book is handsomely presented in Confederate-gray, cloth covers with the distinctive image of three, crossing, Confederate flags on the front cover and lettering on the spine. The book is clean, bright and sharp. It has solid binding throughout. The exterior has no bumping, rubbing or edge wear. The color image is bright and sharp. The interior is clean and the pages are in excellent condition. Aside from the inscription on the front end page with the map, there isn't a mark in the book.
