Description: Archibald Constable and Co. (Edinburgh), 1822. Five of six volumes (missing volume 5) of Historical Romances. Original 5 volumes all have 1822 publication date, but have apparently been rebound in full green leather with gilt border and rectangular design on front and rear boards. The spines have four raised bands, green and brown bands, and heavy gilt decorations. Books have gilt page edges (top, side and bottom). The BINDING with full green leather, heavy gilt decorations, gilt page edges, and rose paper pastedowns and end papers is NOT ORIGINAL, but probably dates from the late 1800s. Book dimensions are 6 5/8" x 4 1/8". Overall, the five volumes are in acceptable to good condition (with the two Ivanhoe volumes being in the worst condition). Defects are: heavy foxing on the title pages, medium foxing on end papers (interior pages are mostly clean), binding of volume 1 is broken with front board barely attached, other volumes have some loose pages, heavy wear at top and bottom of spines, medium wear along edges of spines and at corners of boards, and tarnishing of the gilt top page edges (contrast photos of top and bottom page edges).
