Description: Offered is an original 1925 music recital invitation autographed on the reverse by American composer Henry Hadley (1871-1937). The heavy stock card is 3" x 5", an "at home calling card printed with the name of the host (Mrs. John R. MacArthur) and with the handwritten message "to meet Henry Hadley/ Tuesday Jan. 20 at five o'clock/ Mr. Hadley will play some of his unpublished compositions" and the NYC address "177 E. 78th". THE REVERSE OF THE CARD BEARS THE BOLD PENCIL AUTOGRAPH OF HADLEY along with the date "Jan 20-1925. Other tan two very light strips of gluing to the printed side (obviously this was affixed at one point into a scrapbook) the item is in excellent condition. Massachusetts-born Henry Kimball Hadley was an American composer and conductor who as a young man studied under prominent composer George Whitefield Chadwick. His career began as a violinist in a touring opera company in 1893 and he traveled to Vienna to further his studies in 1894. After returning to the United States in 1896 he began teaching at a Garden City, New York school through 1902; it was during this time that he wrote some of his early important compositions which he had performed by prominent conductors such as John Philip Sousa, Victor Herbert, Walter Damrosch, and Anton Seidl. He made his own debut as a conductor in 1900. He returned to Europe in 1904 where he eventually saw his work performed in 19 cities. After returning to the States in 1909 he became conductor of the Seattle Symphony and in 1911 became the first conductor of the San Francisco Symphony. Returning to New York in 1915 and three of his operas would premiere at the Metropolitan Opera. In 1921, Kimball became the associate conductor at the New York Philharmonic.
