Description: Artist: HARRY GOTTLIEB (American, 1895 - 1992) Title: "American Art for Bal Fantastique" - 1951Medium: Original Lithograph on colored laid paperSignature: Signed in the plateEdition: Limited Edition of 2000, not individually numberedSize: About 12 x 9 inchesPrinter: Artist Equity Funds, Inc.Publisher: Artist Equity AssociationNotes: Part of the Improvisations Portfolio (for the Spring Fantasia Masquerade Ball in New York) published by the Artist Equity Association. The portfolio consisted of advertisements for local New York City businesses where each advertisement was an original lithograph: "Each page was designed by the artist directly on the litho plate, thus making this a collection of original lithographs."This Original Lithograph was produced for an annual art event in the 1950's for local businesses and major corporations largely based in New York. Historically important for corporate archivists, these are extremely rare to locate and are virtually unseen individually. The original lithographs were produced in only one edition, and included just 2,000. These lithographs are perhaps the most unique, rare, important advertising collectibles that exist for businesses and corporations.About the Artist: Harry Gottlieb (September 23, 1895 – July 4, 1992) was an American painter, screen printer, lithographer, and educator. Gottlieb was one of America's first Social Realist painters, influenced by the Robert Henri-led movement in New York City where Gottlieb settled in 1918. He was also a pioneer in screen printing, which he learned while working for the Works Progress Administration (WPA). In 1935, he joined the Federal Art Project (FAP); he was one of the first members of the WPA/FAP's Silk Screen Unit, along with Anthony Velonis, Elizabeth Olds, Hyman Warsager and other fellow printmakers. Gottlieb remained active as a painter and screen printer after the closure of the Federal Art Project, and served as the first director of the short-lived American Artists School in New York City. Gottlieb was a leader and active member of the Artists Union and the Artists Congress. Gottlieb's work is in the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
