For the 1984 Olympic Games, Salvador Dali was commissioned to design the obverse of the Medals that would be issued to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers of each event. These medallions were made exclusively by Intercoin in West Germany. Dali requested that Intercoin mint these medallions in limited sets of precious metals of Gold, Silver, and Platinum. Each coin represents a different Event in the Olympics including: Discus Pole Vaulting Cycling Soccer Diving Track and Field Gymnastics Boxing Equestrian Skiing Archery The reverse side of each coin shows the official emblem of the US Olympic Committee as the host of the games in 1984. Dali and Intercoin were given strict authorization by the Olympic Committee of the United States of America to use the official logo which is a rare occurrence in itself. Each coin is embossed with Dali's signature and they come encased in clear lucite frames.
