Description: The words of this hymn are traditionally set to the melody of Salve Regina Coelitum by Melchior Ludolf Herold (1753-1810). The hymn, both in Latin and in translation, is a well-beloved tribute to the Blessed Mother as Queen of Heaven. The lyrics offered here are set in a tasteful 8" x 10" frame, with wall mount and easel-back. The text of this devotional chant is attributed to the 11th-century monk Blessed Hermann of Reichenau, aka Hermannus Contractus [from the Latin for “limited” or “shrunken”]. A cripple from birth, or at least from early childhood, he was powerless to move without assistance, and also suffered from a speech impairment. Yet he was highly gifted in academics. Through an iron will he triumphed intellectually over the limitation of his disabilities, rapidly mastering written Latin, Greek, and Arabic. Hermann became equally expert in astronomy, theology, mathematics, history, music and poetry. He also developed into a popular teacher: students flocked to him, attracted not only by his scholarship but by his kind, understanding personality. With the loss of his eyesight later in life, Hermann began writing hymns. The exultant Hail Holy Queen Enthroned Above is a faithful translation into English of one of his later poetic accomplishments. Brother Hermann died at his monastery at Reichenau, on Lake Constance in Germany, in 1054 at the age of 41.
