The Persian name for the goddess is Aredvi Sura Anahita (or Anahita for short). Anahita was venerated as the Divinity of the Waters and was associated with fertility, wisdom, and healing. Her cult was widespread in Anatolia, the Levant, Armenia, and the Caucuses. The center of her worship seems to be Lydia (west of Apameia) and several ancient historians, including Tacitus, reference the rituals associated with this goddess. She is identifiable on the coins bearing her likeness by the kalathos on her head, supporting a veil which falls all the way to the ground on both sides of her body. A nice article discussing the goddess and her cult can be found on the Coin Talk forum. Policies I apply the highest ethical standards in selling ancient coins.
