Description: Great Battles - The Battle of Okinawa " width="100%" height="90" border="0"> Great Battles - The Battle of Okinawa DVD Video Description Loose Cannon is proud to preserve the USA's military history via its unique DVD film collections. Using a combination of U.S. Dept. of Defense archive films, combat footage, and period newsreels of the time, each film features actual wartime footage and or first-person accounts from those that were there. The Battle of Okinawa, the last major land campaign in the Pacific war, was fought on the Ryukyu Islands of Okinawa and included the largest amphibious assault in the Pacific War. After a long campaign of island hopping, the Allies were planning to use Kadena Air Base on the large island of Okinawa as a base for Operation Downfall, the planned invasion of the Japanese home islands. The 82-day-long battle lasted from early April until mid-June 1945. The battle has been referred to as the "typhoon of steel" in English, because of the ferocity of the fighting, the intensity of Japanese kamikaze attacks and the sheer numbers of Allied ships and armored vehicles that assaulted the island. The battle was the bloodiest and fiercest of the Pacific War, with some 50,000 Allied and around 100,000 Japanese casualties. The disc contains the following seven movies: - Bulletin of the Okinawa Operation Pt. 1 Official USMC film shows both naval and ground highlights of the battle.
