Georgia Northern 2 Moultrie GA 3/1960 ex Southern 2 New 5x8 Photo

Description: Georgia Northern 2 Moultrie GA 3/1960 ex Southern 2 This is Georgia Northern number 2, in Moultrie, GA in March of 1960. Built by St. Louis Car and Fairbanks-Morse in 1939 for Southern Ry #2, this 800 horsepower and 81 foot long baggage was purchased to be used hauling the Georgia Northern's private car "Moultrie" which was stored in the car shed behind the number 2. When it first arrived it mainly hauled the business car to Albany for sporting events. Later on it was used on wrecking trains and hauling the weed burner. It had been promised to the Atlanta NRHS but they could not get up the funds to move it and so the Southern scrapped it. (From my taplines website) The Georgia Northern Railway was chartered in Georgia on December 20, 1894. The charter was amended on March 10, 1898, February 3, 1899, and May 8, 1907. The company acquired the property of the Boston & Albany Railroad (of Georgia), extending from Pidcock, GA to Moultrie, GA, about 28 miles, and constructed the line from Moultrie to Bridgeboro, 19 miles, in 1896-1898; from Bridgeboro to Albany, about 20 miles, in 1902. In 1905 about 4.5 miles of line from Pidcock to a point 1 mile south of Oaklawn was abandoned and the same length of line was constructed from Pidcock to Boston, GA. The Boston & Albany Railroad was incorporated in Georgia on October 4, 1891, and acquired about 12 miles of railroad from the Quitman Lumber Company. This road extended from Pidcock to Pavo. The Boston & Albany then constructed about 16 miles of line from Boston to Moultrie, GA. In June 1893 the B&A went into receivership and was purchased at foreclosure by J. N. Pidcock for $75,000. On February 7, 1895, Pidcock sold the property, consisting of 28 miles of railroad, to the Georgia Northern. All shares of the capital stock of the Georgia Northern were owned by the heirs of J. N. Pidcock, Sr. The line connected with other railroads, as follows: Boston, GA Atlantic Coast Line Moultrie, GA Atlanta, Birmingham & Atlantic, and Valdosta, Moultrie & Western Bridgeboro, GA Hawkinsville & Florida Southern Ticknor, GA Flint River & Northeastern Albany, GA Central of Georgia; Atlantic Coast Line, and Seaboard Air Line Pelham, GA Flint River & Northeastern The country traversed was rolling. The greater part of the line was laid with 48 and 60-lb. rail. There were 104 timber trestles and 1 steel bridge on the line.
