Description: Estate FindGeorge Sanders BickerstaffAmerican (1893-1954)Oil Painting We offer a signed oil painting by George Sanders Bickerstaff featuring a winding trail in a field of wild flowers leading toward a row of trees. The framed painting measures 23 7/8” in width, 17 5/8” in height and 2 1/2” in depth. The canvas measures 18 1/8” in width and 12 1/8” in height. As shown in the photographs, the painting was varnished at some time in its life while the canvas was still nailed into the frame with the application of varnish stopping before it touched the frame. The varnish has since yellowed. Also it appears a rectangular area of varnish was missed in the application thus revealing the vibrant original colors. A second painting from the same collector's estate by George Sanders Bickerstaff, unsigned by the artist, is offered on another listing. George Sanders Bickerstaff (April 12, 1893, Marianna, Arkansas - July 12, 1954, Ukiah, California) George Bickerstaff was primarily a self-taught artist except for a brief period at the Art Institute of Chicago. He led a peripatetic existence before moving to California in 1922. His early years were spent in San Diego, Los Angeles, and Van Nuys. He exhibited often in the latter with Paul Lauritz. A prolific oil painter of mountain and desert scenes, his landscapes often include eucalypti as well as rolling hills of California wildflowers. Occasionally, he painted seascapes, still lifes, and western and Indian scenes.
