Description: The Principality of Sealand was founded on 2 September 1967 on ‘Rough’s Tower’, an abandoned WW2 gun platform in the North Sea which was outside UK territorial waters at the time, a fact which was subsequently confirmed by a UK court in 1968. In 1978 an attempted takeover by a German businessman was successfully thwarted. In 2006 the Principality was nearly wrecked by fire, but has since been restored. Part of the accommodation is occupied by ‘Havenco’, a secure offshore website-hosting facility. Sealand has recently been extensively featured in two popular travel books: ‘Attention All Shipping’ by Charlie Connelly and ‘Offshore’ by Ben Fogle. These stamps were issued by Sealand in 1970. ‘Sailing Ships’ issue, 30 July 1970 and CTO with this date. Inscribed ‘Postage’. Unmounted CTO. $1.00 – Dutch Ships. Miniature sheet with decorative border. Although the stamp is the same design as the large-format stamp the ‘Postage’ inscription makes it a different stamp (the large stamp is inscribed ‘Airmail’). NB: I no longer have any of the 5v small-format stamps of this issue.
