Description: Friedrich Specht (1839-1909); "Senegal Lion"; drawing; wood engraving by Karl Gottlob Specht (1846-98); from "Our Living World; An Artistic Edition of the Rev J.G. Wood's Natural History of Animate Creation"; publ. Selmar Hess, NY; 1885. Originally published in Brehm's Tierleben, second edition, 1876-79. Sheets approx 12 1/2 x 9 1/2"; plates 8 x 6 1/4"; signed in plate "Specht" and "Karl G Specht". Very good condition. Some page toning. Specht was a prolific painter and illustrator of animal subjects, contributing to not only Brehm's monumental Tierleben, but also Karl Christoph Vogt's "Mammals in Word and Image" (1883-89), and Richard "Lydekker's Royal Natural History" (1894-96). Likely "Our Living World" was an attempt to introduce the highly praised images from the Tierleben to an American audience (Charles Darwin said they were the best he had ever seen). Another Specht brother, August, was also a natural history painter.
