FORMAT Hardcover LANGUAGE English CONDITION Brand New Publisher Description American photographer Francesca Woodman produced six artists books during her short, troubled life. Presented here is a facsimile edition of one of those notebooks. They are refined and evocative objects, created from old school notebooks found in Rome, in which she transcribed in elegant and small handwriting various texts and poems, in French and in Italian, and on which she affixed a sequence of some of her photographs. A precious facsimile edition presents for the first time one of these notebooks, chosen by Francescas family for its beauty. Black and white images are covered, like in the original notebook, by a translucent film that makes the contrast with the notebook paper even more evocative. Author Biography Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) - sensitive and troubled American photographer, considered one of the most intense artists in the 20th century - produced, during her short life, six artists books. Review The somewhat extravagant publication of Francesca Woodmans Notebook is sure to fan the flames of Woodmania even further. A slender volume packaged in a precious, powder-blue cardboard box, it is a finely produced reprint of a turn-of-the-century composition book that the artist found in Rome and embellished, placing her own photographs and text inside its yellowed pages.--Julia Bryan-Wilson "Bookforum" Long Description The American photographer Francesca Woodman (1958-1981) spent a brief portion of her childhood in the countryside around Florence, living with her parents in an old farm whose dilapidated interiors were later to influence the backdrops of her mesmerizing self-portraits. In 1977 she returned to Italy, studying in Rome on a year-long RISD honors program. During this tenure, Woodman found five tattered school exercise books, printed in 1906, side-stapled and inscribed in fine cursive penmanship with notes from physics lectures or poems in English and Italian. To these evocative objects, Woodman--already fully formed as the photographer we recognize and admire today--added her characteristic black-and-white photographs, either as small paper prints or as prints made on transparent film that allows the writing beneath to show through, further embellishing them with her own captions or remarks. This facsimile edition of one of these notebooks was selected for publication by Woodmans mother and father as an artists book of particular beauty and revelatory content that provides unprecedented insight into the emphatically narrative logic of Woodmans photography. Housed in a lightweight printed box, it includes an afterword by George Woodman, Francescas father, that contextualizes the work within the photographers artists book production.
