Description: France ca. 1870: The Old Mill, Important Listed Artist Boyenval This sepia wash study, of an old mill and the young family living there, is from the hand of an important and gifted French artist of the late nineteenth century, Victor Alphonse Boyenval (1832-1903), whose life and work are discussed in the authoritative Bénézit "Dictionnaire." We see an old, somewhat rickety mill, with the wheel turning, a mother and her young child towards the right, and a young man, perhaps the miller, fishing on the left. The skill and craftsmanship are excellent, and one wants to reach out and touch the old buildings. Dimensions are about 8.2 inches by 10.7 inches. The artist has signed, lower left. I see a couple of small spots, upper right. Condition is very good and fresh appearing overall. A watercolor by this artist, just a little bigger than this one, sold for $676 at a 1996 Paris auction. This one is a charming acquisition, priced very moderately. Shipping within the U.S. will be $9. And to see what else I have for sale, please click here.
