Description: FOLK ART PYROGRAPHY Flemish BOX, 1915 PANAMA-PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION Click images to enlarge Description ANTIQUE PYROGRAPHY BOX Wonderful antique pyrography or burnt wood box measuring 6-1/4" by 5-3/4" at about 2-1/2" tall. Featuring a lift-up hinged and beveled lid, this form of folk art was popular around the turn of last century through the 1930s. Also known as Flemish Art, designs would be "burnt" into the wood from a pre-printed pattern. Well executed trailing floral design covers all sides - it is marked FLEMISH 688 on the underside (probably the pattern name) and bears the original label of the 1915 PANAMA-PACIFIC-INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION ~ SAN FRANCISCO. My Grandfather attended the exposition and purchased this box at that time. Condition is very nice - box retains the original embossed brass hook and latch as well as brass hinges. Interior is clean - exterior has minor scuffing, a tiny area of wood loss on the back edge that is original to production and original pencil writing on the base - cost was 20 cents! Visually interesting with wonderful folk art appeal as well as the SF Exposition connection, it would be a nice addition to any collection or home! If questions, please contact me, thanks!
