Description: Incredible leather binding of this 1902 story of how St Francis of Assisi wooed and won my Lady Poverty, the most difficult of all brides. It was written sometime in the thirteenth century (most likely in 1227) by an unknown Franciscan. Reprinted here by John Murray (UK) and Tennant and Ward (US). Designed in the Kelmscott Press, Doves Press, and Vale Press inspired Arts & Crafts style of the day, the black and red ink printed book is in beautiful shape. It's the fine binding of the cover that will catch your eye, however. Alluding to the Medieval origins of the text inside, and yet still with a little bit of Arts & Crafts influence, it's a magisterial piece full of exquisite details, from the leather inlays on the front cover to the blind-stamped design on the spine. Raised bands, gilt, marbled endpapers, etc. - all the hallmarks of a premium fine bookbinder on display. A pencilled note inside from 1922 notes that the book's design was by Hallam Murray, son of John Murray IV (the publisher). Book is in very good + condition, binding still strong, pages clean and clear. A treasure.
