Description: This is a lovely and Fine Antique 19th c. American Tonalist Luminism Plein Air Landscape Oil Painting on canvas, depicting a rural abandoned mill, and surrounding landscape at sunset. A colorful sun-dappled sky and cloud cover illuminate the scene, while several finely rendered trees, grasslands, and an old 19th century mill are visible in the center of the image. Reddish hues and deep yellow are visible throughout, which is a hallmark of the early American Luminism art movement. Signed: EM GATES" in the lower left corner. I suspect this is an early artwork by Emily Emma Goodwin Gates (1857 - 1946,) "Em" being a short nickname for Emily or Emma. Additionally, this piece is titled at the center lower edge: "Deserted Old Mill." This piece likely dates to the 1880's - 1890's. Approximately 15 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 12 x 16 inches. Good condition for well over a century of age and storage, with some small scuffs, spots of light soiling, and mild scuffing, edge wear, and gilding loss to the original period 19th century gilded wood frame (please see photos.) Acquired from an old collection in Los Angeles County, California. If you like what you see, I encourage you to make an Offer.
