This 25th anniversary celebration of No Noise: The Very Best of Eyeless in Gaza (aka Martyn Bates and Peter Becker) runs the gamut in terms of their output for the seminal Cherry Red label. This was a duo absolutely overwrought with beauty and overcome by desolation, clearly defined by the arty side of the post-punk spirit. They didn't rock at all, but they were too overly emotional for labels like Les Disques Du Crepescule. Morrissey was an early admirer -- as he should have been. This set collects 22 tracks on a single disc, ranging from the very early paranoia of "Kodak Ghosts Run Amok," from 1980 and the passionately unglued "Transience Blues," from 1982 -- dig that funky bassline in a place it simply doesn't fit -- to the gorgeously romantic work of "Drumming the Beating Heart" and "New Risen" from 1983, to later work after a hiatus resuming in the middle-'90s such as the shimmering, left of center pop in "Bitter Apples," the orchestral madness of "Struck Like Jacob Marley," and "Hunger Song."
