Engraving after Renaissance Artist Jacopo de’ Barbari, Apollo & Diana, c. 1503

Description: I engraved this in copper by hand after the original by Jacopo de’ Barbari, Apollo and Diana, c.1503. Individually inked, wiped, and printed by hand on an intaglio press: in vine ink on 100% archival Hahnemühle paper from Germany. Engraved area is about 5.75” tall by 3.75” wide; sheet about 7.75” tall by 5.5” wide. Signed: (David) Donovan Copper plate shown in the last photo is not included. Jacopo de’ Barbari was an Italian Renaissance painter and printmaker. Despite the idiosyncratic nature of his engraving style and his mannered figures, de'Barbari influenced a great many contemporary and subsequent artists including Albrecht Dürer. His 1500-1503 engraving of Apollo and Diana undoubtedly inspired Dürer's own engraving of the same subject, and the date inscribed on Dürer's plate gives us a terminus date for de'Barbari's own undated work. (Dürer met de’ Barbari in Venice and mentions him in a letter written at the time.) This engraving describes the precise moment of sunrise. Diana, goddess of the moon (the moon itself symbolically engraved just above her head), moves away from the picture plane with her back to the viewer, partially obscured by the earthly sphere in the foreground; and Apollo simultaneously launches his arrow (as the sun) into the sky. Shipped in archival glassine in a rigid mailer.
