Description: This quilt was made between 1890 and the 1920s by one of our ancestors in Toledo Ohio. The popular 'penny square' or redwork patterns started with embroidery of individual marked patterned squares which were then to be assembled. Individual squares were sold or came as premiums at retail stores or the marked squares and red floss were also available as kits. This quilt features 45 different squares assembled with red cotton fabric and is tied off every 4 inches or so with thick red yarn. The quilt has some inner batting and features 14 inch ruffles along two sides. The quilt measures 42 by 74 inches and would be appropriate for a wall hanging or as a spread for a twin-sized bed. The quilt is in good condition and has been kept in a cedar chest for decades. It has been aired out and has only a slight pleasant smell. The embroidery is well done. No rips or tears. There is one square with a slight stain (near horse legs) and one square that appears unfinished (third up from the horse). See photos for details. Represented here are popular designs of animals, the 4 seasons, flowers and children.
