Description: Maker and age: The renowned Limoges firm Lewis Strauss and Sons, whose mark appears on the base of this elegant covered vegetable dish, exported high quality porcelain from France and other European countries. The firm is also known as Lazarus Strauss & Sons. A green white ware mark with the phrase "M de M France Limoges" also appears. This is the first mark used by Mavaleix. Paul Maurice Mavaleix produced fine porcelain that was usually decorated by other Limoges firms, as is the case here, from around 1908 until the factory closed around 1938. This mark was in use from 1908 to 1914. Source: Third Edition of the Collector's Encyclopedia of Limoges Porcelain by Mary Frank Gaston. Design: In keeping with the exceptionally high quality that made Limoges porcelain so famous and so coveted, the dish is beautifully hand painted with a band of stylized gold filigree against a backdrop of thin translucent white porcelain. Size: The dish is 9 1/4 inches long, 6 1/2 inches wide and 3 inches tall without the lid. It weighs 2 pounds 8 ounces. Condition: Both pieces are in excellent condition with no marks, nicks, chips, cracks, stains, scratches, crazing, utensil marks or significant wear. There is light wear to the handles and embedded dirt on the rim; it's visible in the photos. Please check all the photos very carefully - they are an important part of the description.
