The Physical Properties of Tourmalinated Quartz The stone is formed when liquid Quartz and Tourmaline combine at high temperatures and pressure. The two minerals separate once more as temperatures and pressure drop. This process leaves Tourmaline needles trapped inside the Quartz crystal. Tourmalinated Quartz is rated 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, meaning it can scratch a glass window. While it can be cut into various gemstone shapes, it is often cut en cabochon to marvelously display its black Tourmaline needles. Tourmalinated Quartz is also used in sculptures and carvings.
